Pesticide Risk Indicator for Québec (IRPeQ)
Health and Environment

The Québec Pesticide Risk Indicator, identified by the acronym QPRI, is a diagnostic and decision-making tool designed for the optimal management of pesticides. It has a health component (QPRI-Health) and an environment component (QPRI-Environment).

This tool are the result of close collaboration among:

  • Ministère de l’Agriculture, des Pêcheries et de l’Alimentation (MAPAQ)
  • Ministère de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques (MELCC)
  • Institut national de santé publique du Québec (INSPQ)

The health and environment components of the QPRI enable us to establish a situational and progressive diagnostic of the risks of using pesticides at different levels, such as a company, a sector, a region or the entire Québec province.

Provincially, the IRPeQ is used as a public health and environmental risk evolution marker under the Stratégie phytosanitaire québécoise en agriculture 2011-2021 (Québec phytosanitary agricultural strategy) and in the Report on Sales of Pesticides in Québec. At the corporate level, the IRPeQ also enables both spatial and temporal tracking of risks that are associated with pesticide use. In the context of an integrated control approach, it provides perspective on pesticide risk while encouraging the identification of abative solutions.

The numerous applications of the IRPeQ provide essential information supporting a more responsible management of pesticides within Québec in a sustainable development perspective.
